I love summer simply for the fact that with it comes garage sales and flea markets. Since I was a little girl, I have been frequenting these, helping my mom look for deals and always getting to get something special for myself.
Since Labor Day weekend is a great time for the flea market as it is the official “end of summer” marker and a lot of people know that traffic will be high at the flea market, they bring their best stuff! I had all plans of getting up early Saturday morning, loading my family into the car and heading out to Trader Jack’s to get some good deals. Then, as I was pulling into our plan on my way home from work, I noticed a little garage sale sign. I stopped to read it and boy am I glad I did… our neighborhood was having a huge garage sale!
Scratch the flea market plan, I was staying home, grabbing the stroller and heading out to meet the neighbors and sort through their junk to make my own! Our neighbors Scott and Josh joined us and at 9:30 a.m. we set out. There were probably 15 or so houses having sales, so I knew our loot could be good. I was on the hunt for two major things: little people toys and something Lily could ride on and push with her feet.
Our first stop was a few houses down. They didn’t have very much stuff out, but we were being neighborly and introducing ourselves. In conversation we happened to mention we were looking for toys and the woman said come with me. In her house, she pulled out all kinds of Little People! We had hit the jackpot! For $20 we left with the airplane, the minivan, the full circus, the farm, the boat and the house and all the people that went with each play set. We easily walked away with $150 in toys! It was amazing!
This was by far the best deal we scored all day and we never did get a ride along toy for Lily, but we did get her an amazing Halloween costume for $3 and a 101 Dalmatians chair to watch TV in for $5. All-in-all we scored amazing deals and we won’t have to buy Lily anything else until her birthday!
The only thing I wish I would have bought that we saw was a Little Mermaid vanity that was in perfect condition, but was a little steep at $35. That could have totally been a Santa gift at Christmas, but it is not the end of the world that we didn’t get it. Who knows… maybe in a few weeks it will be out by the trash… I’ve seen it happen before!
